What are dental implants?

Dental implants are made out of a titanium metal inserted into the jawbone replacing the natural root as an artificial one. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant which acts as an anchor to hold it in place.

Why get dental implants?

If you’re looking for a tooth replacement and have healthy gums with enough bone in the jaw to hold the implants, then dental implants might be right for you. We strongly recommend visiting one of our specialists in order to examine your mouth and determine whether they are necessary for you or not.

How dental implants are done?

Dental Implant Assessment

After a thorough examination from your specialist, we can determine whether implants are right for you and what kind of implants you would need specifically.

Dental Implant Placement

During the first stage of the procedure, your dentist will insert a dental implant into your jawbone beneath the gums. The gum tissue is stitched back into place, as the gums heal the implant will attach itself to the jawbone and to the gum.

Abutment Placement

After the first stage of the surgery, once your gums have healed, your dentist will attach an abutment to the implant. The abutment is a post that connects the artificial tooth and the implant.

Artificial Tooth Placement

Your dentist will attach it to the abutment, this may take several appointments to properly fit the tooth. If you are replacing several teeth in line with each other, then a fixed bridge is anchored onto your implants.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal is usually the safest and most common out of the three. They require a good and healthy jawbone for the implant to fuse to. The implant is shaped like screws that your dentist can attach the artificial tooth onto. Once the procedure is done it will take some time to heal.

Zygomatic

Implants

Zygomatic implants are generally the least common out of the three as it is the most complicated procedure and should only be done if the patient does not have enough jawbone for the Endosteal implant. The implant works the same way as the Endosteal implant but instead of being placed into the jawbone the implant is attached to the patient’s cheekbone. At Optimum Smile we understand that if you as a patient cannot support the implants with your jawbone and a zygomatic implant may not be suitable for you then we can also suggest other alternatives that our specialists can offer you and tell you a little more about them.

Subperiosteal Implants

If you don’t like the idea of something being screwed into your jawbone then this type of implant might better suit you. Instead of being fixed into your jawbone, subperiosteal implants rest on top of the bone but still under the gums. The metal frame in which the post is attached is placed under the gum. The gum then heals around the frame to hold it in place. The artificial teeth are then attached to the pole that comes from the gum. This type of implant is usually used by patients who don’t have enough bone for an implant to be placed or the patient is not very keen about having a whole implant drilled into their jawbone.

At optimum smile we understand that if you as a patient cannot support the implants with your jawbone and a zygomatic implant may not be suitable for you than we can also suggest other alternatives that our specialists can offer you and tell you a little more about them.

Other Services

Immediate Load Dental Implants:

These types of dental implants allow for temporary placement of artificial teeth the same day as your implant placement. This option might be suitable for you if you have enough bone to secure the placement of the implant. It’s also suitable for patients if they prefer not to wait for their gums to heal.

Bone Augmentation

We offer bone augmentation or restoration so that your jaw can support the previous implants mentioned as an alternative to zygomatic implants.

Range Expansion

If your jaw is simply not wide enough for implants than your dentist can create a space along the top of your jaw and graft material that can hold implants instead. If the dentist, however, thinks that this procedure is not suitable for you then there are still a few more alternatives for you.

Sinus Lift

This is a procedure that involves adding bone below the sinus if the bone is deteriorating because of missing teeth

Mini Dental Implants

If you have small teeth or you want to replace your front teeth, you can use mini dental implants. Unlike traditional implants, mini implants are one solid piece that screws into the bone with a smaller diameter than the Endosteal implants (usually 3mm).

Here at Optimum Smile, we understand that finding your perfect smile can be difficult, however, we cannot stress enough that finding your smile should not be as difficult as you might think it is. There are several options and different types of implants that you can choose from. We will work closely with you to find the perfect fit for you.
